Initial Consultation and Examination
To understand the patient's health concerns
At the initial consultation, can take up to 20 minutes (and occasionally more if it is a complex case) to fully understand the patient’s complaint and their general health. Detailed questions regarding the nature of pain and how it began are often asked.
Questions regarding the function of all organ systems such as cardio- vascular and gastrointestinal system are frequently asked. This is called case history taking, vital to be able narrow the potential causes of a patient’s symptoms. At the start of every subsequent session, there is a brief check of symptom progression.
To confirm the cause of a patient's complaint
Case history taking is followed by a thorough examination of the patient’s joints, muscles and nerves that could be responsible for the symptoms. This could involve asking the patient to move in certain directions, or else the joints might be moved for the patient whilst the patient is relaxed.
Relevant muscles are stretched and their strength testes to understand their role in the problem. Frequently, the patient’s nervous system is tested by using equipment such as the patella hammer.
After the initial consultation, the examination is focused on the patient’s progress with treatment. The patient is usually asked to undress to get a clear picture of the tissues causing symptoms.
